By preserving a lipid critical to cellular cleanup, researchers improved a severe neurodegenerative condition in both cells and mice – a finding that could have widespread applications in medicine.

One form of “trash” that can cause problems is excess cholesterol. A healthy lysosome handles cholesterol and transports it to other parts of the cell. But when this transporting function is dulled – as is often the case in neurodegenerative disease – cholesterol molecules build up so much that they lead to inflammation and death of cells.

Feeding the world is an urgent challenge: In 2023,we reported that one in 11 people globally faced hunger, with 2.33 billion people facing moderate or severe food insecurity. These disparities in food access and malnutrition lead to a cascade of other problems.

Our history with food research stretches back to the founding grant’s mention of “the study of agriculture in all its branches.” From 1921 to 1996, the our Food Research Institute, inspired by Herbert Hoover, led globally influential research on food systems.

Today, we remains well-positioned to influence the way the world grows, distributes, eats, and thinks about food. Threads of food research and teaching run throughout the university, crossing disciplines and schools, including the work of dozens of faculty members. This is complemented by interdisciplinary and solution-focused efforts established to coordinate this work.

Trained on a dataset that includes all known living species – and a few extinct ones – Evo 2 can predict the form and function of proteins in the DNA of all domains of life and run experiments in a fraction of the time it would take a traditional lab.

Imagine being able to speed up evolution – hypothetically – to learn which genes might have a harmful or beneficial effect on human health. Imagine, further, being able to rapidly generate new genetic sequences that could help cure disease or solve environmental challenges. Now, scientists have developed a generative AI tool that can predict the form and function of proteins coded in the DNA of all domains of life, identify molecules that could be useful for bioengineering and medicine, and allow labs to run dozens of other standard experiments with a virtual query – in minutes or hours instead of years (or millennia).

Mountain lions (Puma concolor) started appearing with increasing frequency on trail cameras at Stanford’s Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve (‘Ootchamin ‘Ooyakma) from 2015 to 2020. Researchers documented a corresponding drop in deer activity compared to the prior years of lower or absent puma activity. Vegetation surveys also showed that many woody plants deer like to eat or tend to trample, including young oak trees, began to thrive.

These types of multi-level effects, called trophic cascades, have been studied primarily in large wilderness areas, particularly cascades caused by apex predators such as wolves reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park. This research, published in Ecology and Evolution, indicates the effect can be found in smaller preserves as well.

If you are able to filter the signal through the noise, you can nudge your life in these moments into having the impact you want, said Pichai, who is the CEO of Google and of Alphabet.

Pichai grew up in the vibrant coastal city of Chennai, India, before arriving at Stanford to earn a master’s degree in materials science and engineering. In his address, Pichai shared three simple filters that have helped him get more life moments right than wrong and take some of the pressure off.
